Just off shore of Kalpitiya, the Bar Reef is a vast swathe of pristine coral reef that has completely regenerated after the El Nino in the 1990's!

The Reef is simply world class and full of marine fish life including Butterflyfish, Bannerfish, Parrotfish, Groupers and even Black Tip Reef Sharks! The Bar Reef which area which spans approximately 307 Square Kilometers was declared a protected marine sanctuary in 1992 by the Government of Sri Lanka. Bar Reef lays claim to being the home for 156 species of coral and 283 species of fish.

The Reef is very shallow. Great care must be taken not to sail over the reef. Entry to the reef should be done with the boat anchored on the sandy area away from the reef. While diving is possible it is unnecessary as it can be accessed easily by snorkeling.
