Fish & Coral: Coelacanth (www.DiveSriLanka.com)

Coelacanth

If you see a specimen consider yourself among the privileged few to have seen a 65 million year old living fossil! Paleontologists believed that they had gone extinct with the dinosaurs until a specimen (dead) was found in East London, South Africa in 1938. Since then many have been photographed well and alive at a depth of 100m - 200m off the coast of Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean. Fishermen recently caught a different species of Coelacanth (pronounced Seal-A-Canth) off the coast of Sulavesi, Indonesia.

WANTED: . DiveSriLanka will pay $1000 to anyone who finds a live or completely intact specimen found off the coast of Sri Lanka. If found contact us. ;)
