Colombo
Ask any technical diver where to find Sri Lanka's best wreck diving and the answer is almost always Colombo. Within a short boat ride of the capital's harbour lie more than a dozen wrecks spanning 30 to 57 metres, from World War I-era armed merchant ships to cargo vessels that went down as recently as 2009 — a rare spread of eras and depths for one dive region.
Names like the Taprobane North Wreck (believed to be the Perseus, sunk in 1917), the Clarke Wreck, MV Astoria and Thermopylae Sierra draw wreck divers and trimix specialists from around the world, while the deeper sites push well into technical diving territory. It's not all metal and rust either — the Gorgonian Gardens are a sea-fan-covered reef found nowhere else in Sri Lanka, and the offshore Taprobane Reefs offer a genuine change of pace from wreck penetration.
The season runs November to May, with the best visibility typically mid-season. Because many of Colombo's best sites sit deep, this region rewards divers with advanced or technical certifications the most — though there are shallower reef options for less experienced divers too.
Colombo's dive centres are used to running technical support for the deeper wrecks, so this is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where you can plan a serious tec-diving itinerary from right inside a capital city.

Barracuda Reef - Mid Point
Colombo has more of it than any diving spot in Sri Lanka, with shipwrecks ranging from WWII naval vessels to one ship that went down in the Indian Ocean in 2009. However, out of all Colombo’s diving spots, the most famous is the Barracuda Reef, located just outside of Colombo in Mount Lavinia.
Black coral wreck
Black coral wrecks are harder to see. You can catch one of the most glorious views of these if you visit the Black coral Reef in the Colombo diving site situated 30 minutes from the Katunayake International Airport. These types of coral give a vast black surrounding to the ocean.
Cardinal Barge
Colombo provides top-notch wreck diving immediately off the city and near the international airport, with more than a few dozen accessible wrecks within recreational diving depths. Many sandstone and rock reefs that Colombo offers have a change of pace from wreck diving, and both these wrecks and reefs are packed with marine life of all sizes, from pipefish and nudibranchs to stingrays and whale sharks.
Clarke Wreck
Colombo, Sri Lanka, is home to some of Asia's most spectacular wreck dive locations, as we have mentioned in a few places in this blog. Off the coast of Mount Lavinia, in the seemingly innocent waters, lays a beauty forever lost to the currents of the ocean. It is a wreck diving site called Thermopylae Sierra, 23 meters below the water's surface. The ship was a former Cypriot vessel that sank on August 23, 2012, after degrading from neglect.
