Galle / Unawatuna

Unawatuna, just outside the UNESCO-listed fort town of Galle, is one of Sri Lanka's most famous beaches — a long curve of pale sand backed by a wide choice of guesthouses and restaurants, rebuilt since the 2004 tsunami into one of the south coast's most popular bases.

The diving matches the reputation on land. This is one of the most consistent places in Sri Lanka to encounter the Giant Maori Wrasse (Napoleon wrasse), alongside a mix of historic shipwrecks and rocky reef formations draped in black coral. Conditions are generally forgiving, making it a solid choice for divers who want reliable marine life sightings without technical depths.

The season runs November to May. Galle's old town, with its ramparts, boutiques and cafés, makes an easy topside pairing for days between dives.
