Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya sits on a narrow spit of sand separating a sheltered lagoon from the open Indian Ocean on Sri Lanka's northwest coast — still one of the country's least developed and most atmospheric dive regions.

The lagoon side is famous well beyond diving circles for its pods of spinner dolphins and, in season, migrating whales offshore, plus some of the best kitesurfing conditions in South Asia. On the ocean side, dive boats make a slow, scenic run out to reef and rock-formation dive sites, rewarded with clear water and a real sense of remoteness rarely found elsewhere on the island.

Diving runs from November to May, in step with the rest of the west coast season. Sites here favour divers who enjoy exploring rock formations and reef structures over wreck hunting — though the wider Kalpitiya peninsula continues to reveal new sites as more of the area is explored.

Between dives, Kalpitiya's small fishing-village character and open horizons make it one of the most relaxed bases on Sri Lanka's dive map.
