Trincomalee
Trincomalee's vast natural harbour, one of the finest deep-water ports in the world, made it the Royal Navy's main Eastern Fleet base during World War II — and that history is written across its seabed.
On the Easter Sunday raid of 9 April 1942, Japanese carrier aircraft struck Trincomalee's harbour and fuel installations, destroying the massive oil storage tanks that once fed the fleet. British Hurricane fighters scrambled to defend the town, and wreckage from both sides — including downed Japanese Zero fighters — still rests in the waters around the city today, alongside a scatter of shipwrecks from the raid itself.
Beyond the wartime history, Trincomalee offers reef diving too, with generally good visibility during the east coast season from April to October — the mirror image of the west coast's monsoon-driven calendar, making Trinco the natural choice when the west coast is out of season.
The city itself, with its ancient Koneswaram temple perched on Swami Rock overlooking the harbour, adds a cultural layer rarely found alongside this kind of wartime wreck diving.
